How do I write an interesting hook?

Successful hooks tend to have several traits. Most importantly, they share a surprising or intriguing fact. They give readers enough context to understand the hook, but leave enough out to make them want to learn more. They are written for a general audience who has no prior knowledge of or interest in the topic area. Lastly, they are concise, and do not attempt to cover multiple facts or present information about the subject beyond what's needed to understand the hook.

When will my nomination be reviewed?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until an editor reviews it. Since editors are encouraged to review the oldest submissions first, it may take several weeks until your submission is reviewed. In the meantime, please consider reviewing another submission (not your own) to help reduce the backlog (see instructions below).

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to this nominations page, it may have been approved and is on the approved nominations page waiting to be promoted. It could also have been added to one of the prep areas, promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, suggest new hooks, or even lend a hand and make edits to the article to which the hook applies so that the hook is supported and accurate. For a more detailed discussion of the DYK rules and review process see the supplementary guidelines and the WP:Did you know/Reviewing guide.

To post a comment or review on a DYK nomination, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Look through this page, Template talk:Did you know, to find a nomination you would like to comment on.
  • Click the "Review or comment" link at the top of the nomination. You will be taken to the nomination subpage.
  • The top of the page includes a list of the DYK criteria. Check the article to ensure it meets all the relevant criteria.
  • To indicate the result of the review (i.e., whether the nomination passes, fails, or needs some minor changes), leave a signed comment on the page. Please begin with one of the 5 review symbols that appear at the top of the edit screen, and then indicate all aspects of the article that you have reviewed; your comment should look something like the following:

    Article length and age are fine, no copyvio or plagiarism concerns, reliable sources are used. But the hook needs to be shortened.

    If you are the first person to comment on the nomination, there will be a line :* <!-- REPLACE THIS LINE TO WRITE FIRST COMMENT, KEEPING  :* --> showing you where you should put the comment.
  • Save the page.
  • After the nomination is approved, a bot will automatically list the nomination page on Template talk:Did you know/Approved.

How to promote an accepted hook

Check list for nomination review completeness
  1. Select a hook from the approved nominations page that has one of these ticks at the bottom post: .
  2. Check to make sure basic review requirements were completed.
    • Any outstanding issue following needs to be addressed before promoting.
  3. Check the article history for any substantive changes since it was nominated or reviewed.
  4. Images for the lead slot must be freely licensed. Fair-use images are not permitted. Images loaded on Commons that appear on the Main Page are automatically protected by KrinkleBot.
  5. Hook must be stated in both the article and source (which must be cited at the end of the article sentence where stated).
  6. Hook should make sense grammatically.
  7. Try to vary subject matters within each prep area.
  8. Try to select a funny, quirky or otherwise upbeat hook for the last or bottom hook in the set.
Steps to add a hook to prep
  • In one tab, open the nomination page of the hook you want to promote.
  • In a second tab, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.

  1. For hooks held for specific dates, refer to "Local update times" section on DYK Queue.
    • Completed Prep area number sets will be promoted by an administrator to corresponding Queue number.
  2. Copy and paste the hook into a chosen slot.
    • Make sure there's a space between ... and that, and a ? at the end.
    • Check that there's a bold link to the article.
  3. If it's the lead (first) hook, paste the image where indicated at the top of the template.
  4. Copy and paste ALL the credit information (the {{DYKmake}} and {{DYKnom}} templates) at the bottom
  5. Check your work in the prep's Preview mode.
    • At the bottom under "Credits", to the right of each article should have the link "View nom subpage" ; if not, a subpage parameter will need to be added to the DYKmake.
  6. Save the Prep page.

How to remove a rejected hook

  • Open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to remove. (It's best to wait several days after a reviewer has rejected the hook, just in case someone contests or the article undergoes a large change.)
  • In the window where the DYK nomination subpage is open, replace the line {{DYKsubpage with {{subst:DYKsubpage, and replace |passed= with |passed=no. Then save the page. This has the effect of wrapping up the discussion on the DYK nomination subpage in a blue archive box and stating that the nomination was unsuccessful, as well as adding the nomination to a category for archival purposes.

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to this page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from this page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

How to move a nomination subpage to a new name

  • Don't; it should not ever be necessary, and will break some links which will later need to be repaired. Even if you change the title of the article, you don't need to move the nomination page.

  • Other problems: No - the article presents the topic as if it wasn't a fringe topic. also, the "cultural and religious significance", "scientific research", and "documentary film" sections read like an large language model wrote it. also, why is there an entire section on a documentary film?

The original version of the article included a lot of content about scientists proving life after death, which has since been removed. I'd restored the material removed without good reason. Use tags and the talk page of the article to discuss article content, please. It's totally bad form to remove 9,000 bytes of cited material without discussion on the article talk page. I didn't nominate this and I am not following the discussion here.   • Sorry for not responding earlier and thank you for the ping. I did not think that my response was needed as there is a clear consensus against the nomination. IMHO the only way to allay the objections here is to shrink the article down to the brass tacks, somewhere around my last edit (Old revision of Tukdam). However, based on my experience and the discussion here, this trimming is currently impossible due to the position of the main author. I had therefore decided not to fight for the nomination - fighting the main author seems pointless. If the participants of this discussion would agree that (1) the said revision has some promise as a DYK candidate and (2) there is a chance of keeping the article in its shorter form, I am ready to put effort into trimming the article. The main author is welcome to chip in when their block expires, which given WP:DYKTIMEOUT won't be before this runs. I will say that the shorter rendition you link to is not 1500 characters and would deserve a lot of tags. ... in promoting a BLP hook when there is new (negative) development? While this is regarding a specific DYK nom, I generally have been inactive in the DYK area hence a lack of knowledge of the norms on DYK reviewing on my part, thus the question here. This is also at no fault of anyone involved in the DYK item thus far. DYK/David Yong was reviewed and approved in July 2024. Almost one month later now in August, he was recently arrested and charged in Singapore for some financial crimes. In this circumstance, will the BLP hook be queued for the Main Page still? Hmmm, interesting question. Are you suggesting a new hook based on this new event, or just wondering how it would affect the currently approved hook(s)? In either case, let me suggest what I think is the best way forward; I can reopen the nomination then you should post your question there where more people can see it.   • From the discussion above: I definitely do think that the recent news does impact ALT1, though ALT0 doesn't seem to be impacted by this, other than the mention of Yong. WP:DYKBLP suggests avoiding undue attention on contentious information, but negative developments do not disqualify a subject from being on DYK as long as BLP and other guidelines/policies are followed. As long as the article is updated, and given how Yong is not primarily known for the recent incident, I can't see how the latest incident should prevent this from being promoted with ALT0. The two ALT hooks are referenced as part of a reference that covers a whole paragraph. The reference should be placed specifically on the sentence being used, even if repetitive. Looking at the article, the article tone may be a more significant issue than the hook. The "Functionality" section vaguely reads like an advertisement, which is probably not the intention but it could still benefit from a rewrite.   • Both hooks are properly cited, with sources that correspond to their location in the article.

Now to my "issues".

  • From what I see, QPQ still needs to be done.
  • For the hooks themselves, both of them could work. Admittedly, both are somewhat on the humorous side, but I guess that's the point. To hook the reader onto the article. The main hook especially is quite funny (subjective view) and takes advantage of the "Did you know that [XX]" portion of the DYK nominations. However, the second hook also brings up the word "coconut", which has become a meme of its own. Regarding this I'm curious, @Spaghettifier:, I don't suppose you have another hook in mind that uses the word "coconut tree" in it? Hi @PanagiotisZois: thank you for the review! The QPQ is complete here. With regard to the hook, I'd prefer to make ALT0 work if possible — it's lighthearted but pretty widely recognizable at this point, and an iconic part of the article. If we need to go with something more straightforward/coconut-centric, another idea might be using this LA Times quote from the reception section:

I am actually okay with the hook. Brown dwarf seems to not be ruled out and the crucial word "might" makes it facilely correct whether or not it is actually this way or that! The problem is that the lead of the article currently says "Mamajek's team initially hypothesized that J1407b is an exoplanet or brown dwarf orbiting the star, but that has since been disfavored by later studies", so if we run this hook it will sound incorrect. Could you maybe take a look at the article when you have some time and make any necessary adjustments or propose a new hook?   • @ජපස and Nrco0e: I've been reading our project pages on the same topic and they basically all share one thing in common that is different from this page. They generalize in the lead and present just the bare facts, and I think that's missing here. We have to assume that most of our readers are not astronomers and astrophysicists. For example, I still find this statement confusing based on the way it is written: "Mamajek's team initially hypothesized that J1407b is an exoplanet or brown dwarf orbiting the star, but that has since been disfavored by later studies". We don't even need to go into all of that. Just fix the lead so that first sentence states right away at the beginning that J1407b is either an an exoplanet or brown dwarf that is likely a free-floating object. Then, from there, once the reader understands what exactly it is they are reading, you can go into the nitty gritty. I have read this six times and I still think the lead is too detailed, particularly in the first paragraph. @User:Chipmunkdavis - Ancient manuscripts aren't usually written on or marked up by anyone these days: the idea that someone would mark or deface an artefact fills most modern people with dread; that a written manuscript of the NT was, to quote Scrivener, "barbarously scored with red chalk" is quite telling of this even from the 19th century. The MS and how it was used is also very important in the history of printed books, as this was the manuscript used for the first ever published printed Greek NT. I don't agree that existence of other coverage has any bearing on whether the student publications should be included. For what they're being used for, i.e. attributed opinion, they're fine. You're right that there is lots of extra coverage of Brat, however Apple wasn't released as a single until very recently and all of the critical reception predates the song going viral, so there's much less of it than you'd think. Surprisingly few critics mentioned it as a highlight. (Much of the coverage went on some of the tracks that actually were singles; most of the hits for ""charli xcx" brat review apple" include phrases like "Apple Music" and "Fiona Apple".)   • @Sir MemeGod: a few things need straightening out here:
  • There are a lot of Harvard errors in the citations and referencing. If you haven't already, I suggest installing this script to catch and fix them.
  • The two sources cited here are not really up to the bar of WP:RS. We need published works, ideally in print, by people acknowledged as experts in their field. Fortunately, Napoleon is not short of people who have written good academic work about him.
  • The hooks need to be explicitly stated within the article itself: neither of these two seem to be.

I would suggest giving the article a fix for the citations, and then looking for two or three good facts from within it for which you have good sources already cited. There is probably nothing I like seeing more on DYK than women scientists. Thanks for this one, Chaiten1. The article is new and long enough. It covers the subject's life and career perfectly well. The sources are of very high quality and even quite accessible too. There are two issues, however. Firstly, "Crane lived in Brighton for the rest of her life" and "a role later taken on by Crane's father" require citations. Secondly, the wording of the hook can be improved. I would propose something like:

The rivalry will probably be understood by US readers, but those outside the US may not be as familiar with the Gators-Seminoles rivalry. The list makes the mistake of providing a mini biography of the subject in the first paragraph of the lead, rather than defining the scope of the list and summarizing what is contained in the list. This is a problem not only because it makes the list unfocused, but also because the vast majority of the text is simply parroting back biographical material found elsewhere rather than providing something new. (A hint, if the lead for a list page looks the same as a biography page then it hasn't been written properly)
The lead needs a complete rewrite. I suggest looking at the lead section of List of awards and nominations received by Adele (an FA List) which jumps right in to defining the list and talking about its scope and dispenses with giving a biographical overview altogether. Another example is List of awards and nominations received by Björk which mixes in some biographical content while still staying focused primarily on awards which is where the focus must be when writing a lead section on a list of awards. The hook is a little confusing to me because it's making it sound like Rustls wasn't written in Rust to begin with, i.e. it's a pre-existing library that's just now being adapted to Rust. I think if the hook were shorter, it would be more interesting. Something like "... that Rustls aims to improve internet security by replacing memory-unsafe software libraries?" I asked for feedback over at WP:DISCORD, and Hilst suggested that the Like other TLS implementations, a computer user may use Rustls without being aware of it, as an underlying part of an application or website part has promise. Thanks Narutolovehinata5 for pitching in! I don't have a citation for "a computer user may use Rustls without being aware of it", so I don't think we can use it as a hook. (I included it in the article even without a citation because I believe it's Wikipedia:Common knowledge about low-level software libraries like this one, at least among people in the software field.) I believe that it's possible for non-specialists to find this topic somewhat interesting, as long as we do a decent job of writing about it, which is why I tried to include bits of context in the article itself. I think the first one is workable, tho I wonder if we can get a cited percentage number for the websites/servers that use OpenSSL (.i.e. more than 90% servers on the internet or 450 million websites on the internet)? It seems tough to find a strong source for how many servers use OpenSSL. The original Heartbleed site estimated it by looking at Netcraft's Web Server Survey and adding together the Apache and Nginx sites, and Netcraft still publishes that survey, but these days you can use Apache or Nginx with Rustls instead of OpenSSL. This Akamai post from 2022 said "Approximately 50% of monitored environments had at least one machine with at least one process that depends on a vulnerable version of OpenSSL", but that's not a total count of OpenSSL in use, and that's a bit old anyway.
I also don't know if it makes sense to describe OpenSSL as "memory unsafe". It's had a lot of memory safety problems, but the current version may or may not have memory safety problems.
An interesting thing to me is that several US and non-US government agencies have advocated for "Secure by Design" software engineering, including using memory safe languages. So that's a potential direction for a hook, but I've only seen that referenced in connection to Rustls in press releases like the ones cited in the article, this one from ISRG, and from SIDN. We'd need to do a bit of synthesis to make that claim, since that article doesn't say that Let's Encrypt uses OpenSSL. And Let's Encrypt is just one certificate authority, although ISRG says it's the world's largest certificate authority. All of that is related to an interesting bit of information in the article, that ISRG runs Let's Encrypt and plans to replace OpenSSL with Rustls this year — but my only citations are press releases from ISRG, which aren't great citations for a hook, and it's also not a great hook because of WP:CRYSTALBALL.   • Comment. The proposed "hook" is not stated in the body and is not supported by either of the proposed references. Where does "arrested for lèse-majesté" ("defamation against the dignity of a ruling head of state"?) come from? The linked Evening Herald article says "arrested for breach of the peace and failure to comply with gardai". Not the offence we are listing here. And the linked Irish Independent (entertainment section) article also says "charged with threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to comply with gardai". Per WP:DYKRULES and WP:DYKHFC, the facts of the hook need to appear in the article (they don't), and the facts of the hook need to be supported by reliable references (they aren't). As it stands, the proposed hook text fails verification and doesn't meet DYK criteria. Hi. While I understand the humour aspect. And I know myself to be more of a pedant than most. But I'd suggest that "not true" is more accurate than "not literal". Per the guideline, hooks should (indeed) be interesting. But "interesting" shouldn't be prioritised to the extent that "accurate" is ignored. As you note, I don't think the proposed hook "works". Because it's not true or accurate. (We haven't exaggerated the facts - so much as we've changed them.) To the extent that, personally, I don't think that hook should be promoted to the homepage. Comment. While the proposed alt1 is better than the originally proposed hook, it is not ideal (as "followed" implies a sense of wile that isn't in the source - which gives "attended with"). If it were me, I think a hook which focused on the subject's experience with homelessness (and attempts to challenge perceptions of homelessness and destigmatise the issue) would make for a more interesting hook.   • Article is in good shape, recently promoted to GA. The hook checks, though the provided source on bulldozers was incorrect -- I have changed it. It might not be the most interesting, given that trucks and bulldozers are commonly used in disaster recovery operations -- could you perhaps suggest a few ALTs?
I would like to see source data information for File:Urduja 17 Animation.gif, but that is not strictly a requirement for GA, and the article would also benefit from some further copyediting. I can find no evidence of the supposed CC1.0 licence on File:Kai-tak imerg 13-18 december 2017 animated.gif and File:Analysis of Tropical Storm Kai-Tak.jpg, but both should be PD as the work of a US government employee. I can find no other copyvio, BLP or other serious concerns.

Can you find anything in the article that would meet that -- for example, things which apply only to this particular storm, or might otherwise be surprising and motivate a reader to click on the article? Article is new enough, long enough, and within policy. However, I don't think this hook works for two reasons. One, the fun of this hook is backwards. The punchline of this hook is when you get to the article and realize it is about a painting and not actual beachfront property. That's witty, but the wit isn't in what one sees on the main page. On its face, the buying of property along a beach isn't interesting, and I don't think the hook will draw in many readers so that they get the wit of the hook which requires actually going to the page. Two, the hook is factually inaccurate. Even if a painting depicts beachside property, the purchaser of a painting knows they aren't buying land, they are buying a painting. I get the humor/wit behind the hook, and if this were an April Fools hook proposal it would be appropriate. The proposed hook itself is interesting, but needs to be rewritten. It states that Héctor Germán Oesterheld himself was a character in his own comic, who was retained after he died. In fact, the cited source states that the character of Germán was "Oesterheld's character" ("el personaje de Oesterheld"), but does not explicitly state that it is him. (Native Spanish speaker here, by the way.) The source makes clear that the character is certainly based on him; the hook needs to be reworded accordingly. Another detail that needs to be ironed out is that the hook unequivocally states that Oesterheld is dead. However, all sources I've read state that he is presumed dead.   • Change "was the best way" to "was essential"; the former implies there were other options even though the source doesn't make such seem as obvious as the latter.
  • Fix the "210–1" to "211–2"; I checked the source and I assume it's probably a mistake, just like "re-establish" (a minor grammar issue I fixed myself).

To say this topic's title sounds highly reminiscent of the Bell Dramatic Serial soaps...but that's besides the point here.
For those keeping track on XTools (at least for the next couple of hours), this nomination officially marks my 20,000th edit on the English Wikipedia--14 years after my last milestone. (Helped a lot--and then some--by my ongoing backlog-clearance drive of AFC's unassessed list, whose near-conclusion my pitch also coincides with.) Many thanks to those I've met on this edition ever since February 2005--whether they're still editing or not.
Seriously, WP needs more coverage on audiovisual media from the Commonwealth Caribbean--and we've only just started by now. A special shout-out to Trinidadian stalwart Guettarda (talk · contribs · count), and CaribDigita (talk · contribs · count) of Barbados; as an occasional reminder, I'm a Commonwealth of Dominica expatriate. Guettarda's recent essay, "Decolonizing Wikipedia" (which I discovered several hours before press time), is recommended reading for future Caribbean-based editors. Here's hoping more from my own native homeland take up the mantle from here.

    • The article was new enough and long enough at the time of the nomination. It is properly sourced; as all the sources are offline I am assuming good faith on verification here. ALT0 has a sourcing issue: the reference backing it up comes at the end of the relevant paragraph; according to WP:DYKG, the supporting footnote should be at the latest at the end of the sentence supporting the hook fact, which in this case is the DSCH signature aspect. ALT2 is a rather complicated hook so I'm rather disinclined to approve it. My preferred hook is actually ALT1; however, the article does not actually seem to back it up. The article is unclear if the String Quartet was even started, or if it was started but simply unfinished: if it was the former, then ALT1 is accurate. To be sure, I'm pinging Kingsif and RoySmith regarding ALT1 as both are knowledgeable about quirky hooks and their suitability. If ALT1 is unsuitable, only ALT0 will be approved.
    There is another major concern: the lack of a QPQ. Per a recent discussion, the guidelines have changed so a QPQ should now be provided at the time of the nomination, rather than up to a week afterwards.     @Narutolovehinata5: Meyer seems to imply in the transcript of his 1974 visit to Shostakovich and in his 2014 interview that the quartet was never even sketched. However, in the latter he also states ambiguously (emphasis mine): "[A]las, [Shostakovich] was not able to complete the project regarding the Sixteenth [Quartet]". Neither of the articles cited specifically details how much progress, if any, Shostakovich had made on this work at this point or ever. My copy of Meyer's monograph on the composer (in the Spanish translation) is also of no help; his mention of the work therein is even more fleeting. I've looked through the various books by Sofia Khentova, Shostakovich's official biographer, including her massive two-volume biography, which is far more exhausting in detail than any current English language books on the composer. It mentions various obscure odds-and-ends and aborted projects—but no String Quartet No. 16. Derek C. Hulme's Dmitri Shostakovich: The First Hundred Years and Beyond has an entire appendix devoted to such works. Again, no mention of this quartet. I've also not been able to find mention of it in the various Russian language sources in my personal library or in Levon Akopyan's editorial notes in the ongoing New Collected Works Edition of the quartets. For what it's worth, it's probably more likely that Shostakovich never went beyond working through the quartet in his mind. By 1974, his neuro-muscular disorder had made writing extremely difficult and exhausting for him. Consider that he had not even begun to work on the Fifteenth Quartet on April 11, 1974. (Meyer's visit and questioning may have been the catalyst to finally get work on that going: his first extant sketches are dated April 13.) The penmanship in the autograph copy of his last work, the Viola Sonata from July 1975, clearly evinces that it was a struggle just to get the notes to paper. (By this point, he could only write by having his left hand support his right.)     ALT1 is actually the sticking point here. The accuracy of the hook depends on how one interprets "there is no String Quartet No. 16." If one means "it was never made", yes it's accurate. If one means "it never existed", then exactly what "exist" means is the issue. The finished product doesn't exist, but as you said there's ambiguity if sketches or work was made. If they did, it technically did exist, if in an unfinished/unreleased state. Even if not, one could argue that it did exist as a concept if not as a composition that was at least attempted, so the hook is too vague and ambiguous.
